More on this baby food thing

So far our little guy has tried peas, carrots and banana. We purchased organic produce, pureed the peas and carrots - fed some and froze the rest. Simple. For bananas, I have just been mashing them up in rice cereal in the am (just to see if he's got an allergy) and he doesn't. The doctor told us to use the 4 day rule on foods. If you try a food on Monday, you don't start a new food till Friday. So, we did peas for 4 days then carrots for 4 days - then introduced banana in the mornings - and stuck with the peas and carrots for dinner since we knew they were "safe".

Tonight Will gets to try butternut squash that we made last week and froze. Hope he likes it! After that, I purchased organic, no added sugar applesauce from Trader Joe's and I plan to try that in the mornings in his rice cereal for 4 days while we alternate with the peas/carrots/butternut squash for dinner. Then we want to give sweet potatoes a try. It's actually a pretty slow process when you think about it - since we have to do the 4 day rule thing.

------

We boiled the bag of organic baby carrots (already peeled) until they were super soft. Put them in the bullet with some of the cooking water and pureed them until they were the consistency that we wanted. Then, we scooped them into the fancy container mentioned in this post - placed that in the freezer for about 24 hours (don't do too much longer than that or ice crystals can get trapped under the top onto your food as you can see some already started to form on ours).

Then I popped the food out...

Then, I wrapped each serving in aluminum foil so that they wouldn't stick together and one or two could be pulled out at a time. Put in a zip lock and dated.

I will say that we have learned not to fill the tray to the entire top - as that serving is a bit too much for Will currently. He won't eat that much. So now we know - live and learn. In the evenings, I just pull out one frozen serving and put it in Rubbermaid container and stick it in the fridge. So, when we're ready the next night to feed him, I can just pop it in the microwave until it's warm.

The bag of organic carrots at Trader Joe's was about $2.00. It actually made about 10 servings (we put what didn't fit in the mold into a couple smaller frozen Rubbermaid's). Plus - we know exactly what's in this. We're pretty sure with this savings in baby food and Greg's smoothies, the Magic Bullet has already paid for itself.

Any tips on how you take care of your baby food? Would love to hear how you do it - how baby likes it - and what your baby's favorite food is!
