Hidden Post Series: Rachel knows. Family knows now, too. Well, most of them.

Friday, August 17, 2012

So, I had lunch with my best girlfriend ever, Rachel. I told her. First, keeping a secret from her is just not going to happen. Plus, we kind of made a promise that when we were, we'd tell each other. So, over a pepperoni flat bread at Cafe Carolina I told her.

She was so excited - and it was nice to chit-chat with a girlfriend about all the silly details (that I basically secretly blog). And now, I can still tell stuff too as doctor's appointments, etc. go by.

And, more importantly - I feel A LOT better having someone other than our parents and G know. Oh, and Jami (my good friend from work) also knows. I spilled the beans to her really quickly about two weeks ago. She straight up asked me and I couldn't lie.

So, here's to them knowing!

This weekend we decided to spill the beans to most of our family. We already had made dinner plans with G's family (which includes his mom, dad, Granddad and Aunt - his cousin was unable to attend) so we'd share the news with them. His mom and dad have known for a while now - and, we figured we saw an ultrasound on Monday - everything looked good and on Labor Day we'd be 12 weeks - so, we figured it was time.

So, we purchased a cake to bring out at dessert time to show his granddad (this will be his first great-grandchild!). G was too cute, saying, "we have this cake - we're really proud of the icing." It reminded me of  Baby ran into Johnny in Dirty Dancing for the first time and said, "I carried a watermelon". Too cute.

Everyone was super excited - and it was hard sitting through dinner without busting out the big news from the start. But, it was worth it!

I should also let you know that after we bought the cake we had to stop by my mom and dad's house for a second and couldn't leave the cake in the car - so we carried it inside and my mom's mom was there - so we told her and showed off the cake. She was also thrilled for us.

So, on Sunday we decided to tell my dad's mom - and she is almost 91 had has more great grand kids than you can count. She even has great, great grandchildren at this point - so, she was excited - but, I think it's like "another one!?!" for her at this point - but, again, she is so happy for us.

Then, several other members came to G-ma's house and we shared the news. I was really excited to tell my cousin, Deana, the news - she is having baby 3 in just a couple weeks - and she had known that G and I would probably starting to "try" a few months back. It was really special to tell her in person and cry together - and, now, I can certainly ask a bunch of questions to her and she will answer honestly with no judgement. (being an "early" pregger - this is golden!) Plus, I suppose I could maybe borrow some boy or girl clothes from her at some point, too - since she has children of both genders - another bonus!

True story: Deana's daughter, Rivka, asked very seriously: "Are you going to be a mommy?!" and I said "Yes!" and she says, "Who's the daddy?" - "Um, Greg!" Haha - too cute. You have to love 5 year olds.

So, a lot of our family knows which is really exciting. We made bets on how big I'd get, if it'd be a boy or a girl (still wondering if my dentist was on to something with "boy") and just smiled and laughed and took it all in. It's a big change when everyone knows - it's no longer just our secret, or the "thing" we don't mention.

The plans for everyone else? Well, we go back for the other ultrasound on Friday - if all looks well (praying!), we will share the news with my closest co-workers at our house at Game Night. Then, G and I are off to the beach with Jami and Steve for a week - so, when I return it would be time to tell the boss and then slowly everyone else. And, as you know - nothing is official until it's Facebook official - so, within the next few weeks, the whole world will know.

We are so blessed to have so many family members (and the few friends that know, too!) thinking about us and praying for us - it means more than you'll ever know.
